About my work I design and make glass for architectural settings creating artworks that respond to the nature of a space, interact with the varying light of day and are constantly changing, allowing new detail and discoveries each time they are viewed. Inspired primarily by light and its interaction with reflective surfaces, I mix reflective and matt, transparent or translucent surfaces, layering them to create visually delicate works with complex spatial relationships. In addition to commissioned site specific work, I am also continually producing artwork in glass and other media following my own independent trail of creative ideas to make artworks and installations for gallery and domestic interior or exterior environments.
About me I’m based in the beautiful seaside town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Originally trained in fine art (painting and printmaking), sensibilities developed during these early years are still evident within my current work. Gradually gravitating towards glass through a lifetime fascination with all things transparent, translucent and reflective, I took the plunge and committed myself to glass in 2007. In 2009 I completed a Masters Degree in Glass at the University of Sunderland, graduating with a Distinction. I’ve been awarded an AHRC funded studentship to undertake PhD research at the University of Sunderland and have begun studying part-time whilst continuing with commissions and other artwork, due to graduate with my doctorate in 2019!
Commissions Designing and making architectural glass to commission for a wide variety of applications I work with both corporate and private clients on projects varying in scale and budget. Taking a consultative approach to the commissioning process, I work to reflect clients’ aspirations, combining creativity, technical skill, and high quality materials with sensitivity to the requirements of a brief.
As well as producing glass in-house, I have excellent contacts with other fabrication specialists, allowing a full ‘from concept-to-completion’ service.
I often collaborate with artists from other disciplines, and am enthusiastic about the collaborative process, which allows a broad range of exciting possibilities. I have worked with designers, film-makers and fine-artists on previous projects.
I also have expertise and a wealth of experience in leading workshops with the community and in undertaking large scale art project management.
About my blog Art, Life and Architectural Glass is a documentation of my work as an artist specialising in architectural glass. It aims to show a record of what I’m up to – projects I’m working on, things I’m thinking about, what I’m actually creating and how those things came about as well as interesting stuff I see, find, read, listen to or experience. It is intended to give some sort of background view of myself as an artist, showing the person and processes behind the artwork.
